Very interesting, black-coloured and aluminium-based ID-plaque ('Schild') entitled: 'Wachmann des Festungs-Pionierstabes 23' (bearing a serial-numeral and period-engraved name: 'O.Gef. Ludwig Deppich')
This is a very interesting - and actually by me only once before encountered and surely rarely found! - black-coloured and/or typical aluminium-based ID-plaque (ie. 'Schild') entitled: 'Wachmann des Festungs-Pionierstabes 23' being a clearly used example that is bearing a unique (low!) serial-numeral (that reads: '139') and (roughly) period-engraved text on its back that reads: 'O.Gef. Ludwig Deppich - Geb. 1-9-07 - Gef. 7-9-45' (or alike) and that comes in an overall nice- albeit surely used-, condition. The oval-shaped shield measures approximately 10,5 x 6 cms. and retains most of its period-apllied, black-laquered colour: it does, however, show some obvious age, wear and/or staining. I could not find any further reference-material regarding these shields ie. usage and deem that this item (ie. the unit: 'Festungs-Pionierstabes 23') most certainly needs further investigative work!
