This is a neat, post WWI- (ie. pre-WWII-) period- (ie. 'Freikorps'-related) arm-badge ie shield: 'Selbstschutz Oberschlesien' that comes in an overall nice, albeit truly used- ie. worn condition. The shield - that was awarded to the 'Selbstschutz Oberschlesien'-member around 1920 - measures approximately 6,5 x 4,3 cms. and is executed in hollow-styled, copper-based material (I deem messing). These shields were worn on the right upper-arm and had to be tunic-attached by means of the 4 punched holes (visible on the left- and right corner and bottom). These shields depict 'a downward-positioned sword that kills various snake-like creatures' and can a such be seen as sample-piece that was used to design the later-war-period 'Bandenkampfabzeichen' that was issued in the year 1944. The piece on offer here was clearly used and does show some obvious age, wear and/or staining as can be noticed on the pictures. This example originates from an older collection of interesting, pre-1933 insignia and badges that I recently acquired for the web-site. I deem that I did price this attractive: 'Ärmelschild des Selbstschutz Oberschlesien', accordingly!
